Raven’s Flight – A Bold, Modern Quilt Block

May’s Quilt Block Mania theme was Up in the Air, and my mind immediately went to wings in motion. Raven’s Flight is a bold, graphic quilt block that captures the movement of a bird just as it takes off—sharp, swift, and full of energy.

If it looks familiar, you’re not imagining things.

This block is inspired by the raven shapes in my Raven’s Dream quilt. While it’s not identical, it echoes that silhouette—reimagined as a standalone block perfect for a pillow, mini quilt, or mixed into a modern sampler.

Why You’ll Love the Raven’s Flight Block

This block is:

  • 12” finished and traditionally pieced

  • A striking choice for solids or tonal blenders

  • Great for showing off bold contrast

  • Quick to sew, with no tricky seams or templates

I love using a dark fabric for the “raven” portion—it reads like a shadow in flight across a sunset sky. But you can easily flip the palette for something lighter and more abstract. It’s one of those blocks that can be moody, modern, or playful depending on your fabric pull.

A Modern Spin on “Up in the Air”

This month’s QBM theme brought all kinds of creativity—stars, spaceships, moons, and beyond. But I kept coming back to birds. There’s something magical about the motion of wings—both powerful and weightless. Raven’s Flight captures that energy in a simple silhouette with clean lines and a sense of motion.
