Threads of Intention BOM – May Block: Synergy
Can you believe we’re already on Block 5? Synergy is the fifth block in the Threads of Intention Block of the Month, which means there’s just one more to go after this!
This month’s block is a beautiful blend of precision and balance—built around two classic units: the Economy Block and the Quarter Square Triangle. I’ve got step-by-step photos and plenty of tips to help these come together smoothly.
Economy Block Tips
The economy blocks in Synergy are made with oversized triangles, giving you room to trim them down for clean, sharp points.
📏 Pro Tip – Centering Your Triangles:
Before adding your side triangles, crease the center triangle in half vertically. Then, when placing the side triangle, align its point with the crease. It’s a quick way to make sure everything is centered and stays that way!
🪡 Trimming Tip:
When trimming, be sure to leave a ¼” seam allowance around the points so they don’t disappear when sewn into the final block.
Quarter Square Triangle Tips
Last month we made half Quarter Square Triangle blocks—but this month, we’re going all the way! 😉 These classic units bring structure and symmetry to the block, and with a few simple tips, they come together beautifully.
✏️ Marking Tip:
Instead of using a pen or pencil, I like to use a Hera marker to mark my diagonal lines. It gives a crisp crease without adding ink or graphite to your fabric.
🧵 Pressing Tip:
Press both sets of HSTs toward the B7 fabric—this sets you up to nest the seams easily when you join them.
📌 Pinning Tip (Yes, I’m Team Pins—Just This Once!):
Normally I reach for clips, but for these units, a couple of well-placed pins make all the difference. Lay your blocks right sides together so the seams “bump” or nest into one another, then place a pin on each side of the diagonal to keep things perfectly aligned as you sew.
📐 Trimming Tip:
Just like last time, when trimming your finished Quarter Square Triangle units, keep the center point at the 3¼” mark on your ruler. That intersection should stay right in the center to keep your block balanced and tidy.
Plan Before You Sew
As always—lay out all your pieces before sewing the final block together. This extra step helps catch rotated or misplaced units before they’re sewn in. A quick double-check now saves a seam ripper later!
Final Thoughts
Only one block to go after this—and I’m loving how your Threads of Intention quilts are coming together! Don’t forget to tag @apieceofquietquilts and use #ThreadsOfIntentionBOM when you share. Each month you post, you’ll be entered to win free longarm quilting on your finished quilt top!
The Aftermath
Let’s be real—making and photographing a block can get a little messy! Here’s a peek at the aftermath of my sewing session. It’s not always tidy, but it’s always worth it.
