Threads of Intention BOM: April Block - Gifted

Welcome to Month 4 of the Threads of Intention Block of the Month!

This month’s block, Gifted, is all about symmetry, balance, and just enough of a challenge to keep things interesting. You’ll be building on the skills you’ve already practiced—but this time, we’re introducing a new unit: the Half Quarter Square Triangle.

If you’ve never made this unit before, don’t worry—it’s not as tricky as it sounds. In fact, I’ve gathered a few helpful tips (and photos!) to walk you through the process with confidence.

Half Quarter Square Triangle Tips

This unit might sound a little intimidating, but it’s really just about combining shapes you already know how to make! You’ll start by cutting squares into halves or quarters to create your starting triangles, then sew them together to form a dynamic and symmetrical unit.

Here are a few tips to help you get clean, accurate results:

You might notice that the B3 triangle is slightly larger than the BG1 + A6 triangle combo. Don’t worry—that’s intentional! These units are designed to be oversized so you can trim them down for precise, crisp results.

Trimming the Half Quarter Square Units

At this stage, your unit should be slightly oversized to allow for trimming. The goal is to trim it down accurately while keeping those points nice and sharp.

Use a square ruler that’s at least 6½” (larger is fine too!). Align the 45° diagonal line on your ruler with the seam line of the block. Then, use the point at 3¼” in from each side as a guide to center the block before trimming. This helps ensure that all your points land where they should when the block is sewn into your quilt.

Plan Before You Sew

Before stitching everything together, take a moment to arrange all your pieces. This step is especially important in this block to make sure the units are oriented correctly—those pointy stars only shine when they’re all facing the right direction! 🙂
