Quilt Preparation

Quilt Top

  • Please press your top and backing for me so that it's nice and tidy and ready for me to load.

  • Please also clip stray threads or raveling fabrics as best as you can. You might not be able to get them all, but to prevent dark threads from shadowing through your quilt top, please don't skip this important step!

  • Please mark (safety pin is great!) the top edge of your backing and quilt top to avoid any confusion.

  • Please be sure your quilt top is also squared before shipping.

Quilt Backing

What size should my backing be?

In order to give you the best possible results, please ensure your backing fabric is a total of 8" wider and 8" longer than your top. This provides 4" of margin on each side for me to properly secure your quilt to my frame.

For example, if you have a quilt top that is 60" x 80", your backing should measure at least 68" x 88". It can be bigger, not smaller. Your backing should be squared before shipping because the top and bottom edges will be attached to the rollers on the frame. This means if you pieced your backing, you have trimmed the sides so that the quilt has two sets of parallel sides. We recognize this can be challenging at home with small surfaces, but will guarantee the best results for your finished quilt. Extra fees may apply if I need to put extra time and effort into getting your quilt ready to load. If you have questions, please ask.

Batting

If you are choosing to send your own batting, please ensure that it is at least 6 inches wider and longer than your quilt top. A high quality batting works the best.

If you prefer to use the batting we provide, you can carefully select from the options when you book your quilt. I currently offer Quilter’s Dream 100% cotton and their 80/20 cotton/poly blend. If you prefer a different batting (such as their wool or bamboo), I can also order that from Quilter’s Dream directly.
